Illinois

Electric bicycle classes, sidewalk restriction, and path access

Illinois defines three classes up to 750 watts. E-bikes generally have bicycle rights on roads and bike lanes; Class 1 and 2 may use paths unless locally prohibited. State law prohibits e-bike operation on sidewalks. Operators under 16 may not operate Class 3 except as passengers; Class 3 bikes need a speedometer.
